Dow

ETHERINGTON AWARD

Jeffrey D. Dow, DMD

Yankee Dental Congress is pleased to present the prestigious 2020 Etherington Award to Dr. Jeffrey Dow of Newport, ME. This award is given annually in recognition of New England dentists who dedicate much of their professional lives to furthering the high ideals and objectives of organized dentistry. A Tufts University School of Dentistry graduate, Dr. Dow has been a member of the ADA for nearly 40 years. Dr. Dow served on the American Dental Association Board of Trustees representing the First District. He is a past president of the Maine Dental Association (MDA), chaired the Maine Dental Association Council on Governmental Relations, is an original Board Member of the MDA Charitable Foundation, and Past President of the Kennebec Valley Dental Society. Dr. Dow served nearly 50 years in the military, retiring as a Colonel in 2003. He serves on the State of Maine Medicaid Advisory Committee and Maine Dental Access Committee, ensuring access for thousands of patients. He has also travelled extensively to volunteer his services in third world countries. As a Yankee Dental Congress volunteer, Dr. Dow served on the General Arrangements Committee, Hospitality and Special Events Committee, and Volunteer Orientation Committee. Dr. Dow currently maintains a private practice in Newport Maine where he also resides.


Cognata

CLINICIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD

Michael J. Cognata, DMD

Dr. Michael Cognata, a 2019 Fredrick Moynihan Distinguished Service Award winner, has served as a lecturer at Yankee Dental Congress for the past decade. A graduate of Tufts Dental School and the Harvard-Forsyth Postdoctoral Orthodontic program, he also earned a Master of Medical Science Degree in Oral Biology. Dr. Cognata has over 35 years of experience in private practice, and has spent over 28 years on faculty teaching part-time at the Forsyth Dental Center and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine Department of Orthodontics, where he was both Director of Pre-Doctoral Orthodontics and Clinical Instructor of Post Doctoral Orthodontics. Dr. Cognata is a fellow in the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the former Secretary of the Harvard Society for the Advancement of Orthodontics. He served as the East Middlesex District Secretary, Chairman, and then Trustee for MDS. He is a past Yankee General Chair and past president of the Massachusetts Association of Orthodontists. Dr. Cognata has offices in Marblehead and Boston, MA.


Lipsitt

ELIZABETH A. BAER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Susan L. Lipsitt, CDA

Susan Lipsitt has been a CDA for over 15 years. A volunteer at Yankee Dental Congress for the past decade, she has served as both presiding chair and room coordinator. Ms. Lipsitt completed a Fellowship from the American Dental Assistants Association in 2012 and has obtained and maintained a Certification in Advanced Cardio Life Support. She also received a National Certification in Phlebotomy. A graduate of Endicott College with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts, Ms. Lipsitt divides her time between a general dentist practice and oral surgery office. She resides in Hyde Park, MA.


Tetreault

HYGIENIST OF THE YEAR AWARD

Denise C. Tetreault, RDH

Denise Tetreault has been a member of the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA) for the past 15 years. A 2006 Southeastern Massachusetts Dental Hygienist of the year recipient, Ms. Tetreault is also a Consultant Member for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (CDCA), and a member of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). She was the final Department Chair of the Dental Hygiene Program at Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts before its closure in 2018, and facilitated the transfer of Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA) sponsorship to Regis College. A registered hygienist for close to 40 years, Ms. Tetreault, who earned a Master of Education at Cambridge College, is Program Director of the Dental Hygiene Department and Associate Professor at Regis College in Weston, MA. She resides in Acushnet, MA.


Martin

JOHN GOLDEN AWARD

Raymond K. Martin, DDS

Dr. Raymond Martin has been an active volunteer for over 20 years, taking on integral roles at the Massachusetts Dental Society and Yankee Dental Congress. Receiving a dental degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1983, Dr. Martin also completed the Tufts General Practice Residency in 1984.  He has served as President of the Massachusetts Dental Society and currently serves as MDS Speaker of the House. He has served as Editor and Chair of the Southeastern District Dental Society, Board member of the MDS Foundation, and MDS Trustee. Dr. Martin has served on various Yankee committees including Program, Specialty Relations, Sponsorship, and is past Yankee General Chair. He is a fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, Pierre Fauchard Academy, International College of Dentists and American College of Dentists. Dr. Martin maintains a private practice in Mansfield and was recently commissioned as a Major in the Massachusetts Air National Guard.


Beninato

ARMEN NALBAND AWARD

Joseph P. Beninato, DMD

A member of the Massachusetts Dental Society since 1985, Dr. Joseph Beninato has been a devoted volunteer for many years. He has served as a member of many Yankee committees including General Arrangements, Signs, Exhibits, Oversight and Registration-which he has chaired twice. For the past three decades, Dr. Beninato has worked as a part-time instructor at Northern Essex Community College and volunteers for the Red Cross where he teaches swimming and CPR. A Tufts University School of Dental Medicine graduate, he practices dentistry in Lawrence, MA. He and his wife reside in North Andover and have two children together.


Trowbridge

VIVIAN CHAPUT AWARD

Karen Trowbridge

Karen Trowbridge has been a valued Yankee volunteer in the Social and Cultural program for over a decade. She has also served as Chair of the Social and Cultural Committee as well as a member of the Registration Committee. A graduate of New York University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications/Journalism/Politics, she worked in the marketing field for over 15 years. She and her husband, MDS Treasurer Dr. Thomas Trowbridge, reside in Newburyport, MA.


Lew

VOLUNTEER AWARD FOR AUXILIARIES

Joyce L. Lew, RDH

Yankee Dental Congress is pleased to honor Joyce Lew for her dedication as a Yankee volunteer for almost forty years. Over the years, she has served as Day Captain, Presiding Chair, and Room Coordinator. A graduate of New York City Community College for Dental Hygiene and O’Hehir University with a BS in Oral Health Promotion, she recently retired from dental hygiene and has found fulfillment as a companion for the elderly. Ms. Lew and her husband Larry have two children and six grandchildren
