This course will review current data on the relationship of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection with oral cancer and tonsillar cancer. Attendees will examine the conventional visual and tactile examination of the dental patient, with emphasis on thorough palpation for possible lymphadenopathy. Case-based examples will emphasize high-risk settings and clinical characteristics for both oral and tonsillar cancer.

After this course attendees will be able to:
- Describe the major risk factors and trends for oral and tonsillar (oropharyngeal) cancers
- Discuss a standard approach to clinical evaluation of the dental patient, including visual and tactile evaluation of the face, neck, and oral cavity
- Identify current tests for HPV and HPV-related cancer
- Review current evidence for the safety and efficacy of HPV vaccines
