This course will examine the conventional examination of the dental patient, with an emphasis on the clinical features of oral precancerous and cancerous lesions. Case-based examples will be used to emphasize high-risk settings and physical characteristics that can help distinguish worrisome lesions from a variety of other conditions. Attendees will review current data regarding the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in oral cancer as well as tonsillar cancer. The potential role of devices or tests to assist in the detection of oral cancer and precancerous lesions will also be discussed.

  • Examine a standard approach to clinical evaluation of the dental patient, including both visual and tactile evaluation of the face, neck, and oral cavity
  • Explain the clinical features of oral conditions that may mimic true leukoplakia
  • Review current concepts of oral cancer and precancerous lesions, including risk factors for oral cancer as well as tonsillar/oropharyngeal cancer
