Oral Lesion Biopsy and Adjunctive Device Techniques
This course will cover indications for biopsy, case selection, straightforward differential diagnosis, informed consent, surgical biopsy site planning (incisional and excisional), armamentarium, suturing, and post-operative management strategies. Using pig mandibles, attendees will be introduced to and practice surgical skills: punch and conventional scalpel blade incisions, specimen harvest, and biopsy site closure. Pathology laboratory selection/interaction, documentation, billing, biopsy report interpretation for common lesion diagnoses, patient discussion points, management and referral strategies will also be reviewed. Lesion assessment adjunctive devices and tests (i.e., toluidine blue dye, tissue fluorescence and transepithelial cytology) are reviewed in the context of treatment planning and performing scalpel biopsies.
- Learn the basics of gingival and soft tissue oral biopsy techniques
- Identify appropriate case selection and surgical planning
- Experience performing operative skills necessary for safe and effective oral biopsy procedures
- Understand post-operative skills and strategies to help minimize potential complications
- Review current oral lesion assessment and biopsy guidelines
- Become familiar with lesion assessment devices and their appropriate role in the context of evaluating oral lesions
