Introduction to Dental Sleep Medicine
Sleep disordered breathing is widespread in the US, and various sleep disorders are evident in the dental patient population. Relevant sleep disorders, systemic diseases, medical diagnostics, and oral appliance therapy (OAT) for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)/snoring will be presented. Dental & Sleep Medicine guidelines, dental assessment, patient eligibility, protrusive bite registration, OAT options/selection, and common side effects/limitations will be introduced.
- Discuss sleep disorders, associated diseases, screening, and diagnosis
- Become familiar with medical management of various sleep disorders
- Learn how oral appliance therapy (OAT) can manage obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)/snoring
- Understand the limitations of OAT for OSA/snoring, as well as alternate management strategies
- Explain dental and sleep medicine guidelines
- Review mandibular advancement device options, patient selection/eligibility, protrusive bite registration, and commonly anticipated OAT side effects
