Amanda Berthiaume, CDA, RDH, MSDH graduated with honors in 2015 from Springfield Technical Community College and in 2020 from MCPHS University with her master's degree in dental hygiene education. An active ADHA member since 2013, she is proud to serve her second term as President for the Massachusetts Dental Hygienists’ Association. She was honored to accept the MDS Dental Hygienist of the year award for 2023 and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Dental Sciences Program at STCC.

The Dental Professionals Role in Gender Diversity


Be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community in providing equitable care. We should understand how to communicate with gender diverse patients and coworkers in order to uphold the standards of care and ADHA outline. Attendees will complete the course with an action plan for creating and implementing clinical and office protocols in providing an environment of safety and competency of care for this fast growing population of patients. 

After this course attendees will be able to:
  • Understand vocabulary, terms, and trends in relation to gender identity
  • Discuss barriers to these individuals seeking and obtaining dental care
  • Learn how to create strategies and office protocol for cultivating a safe and understanding environment of gender diversity
  • List the common medications prescribed to these individuals and the oral effects including hormones and periodontal health
  • Identify who to connect with for interprofessional collaboration in treating the whole patient
