Timothy Hempton, DDS is an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at Tufts University, a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and the recipient of the 2011 Yankee Dental Congress Clinician of the Year award. He maintains a private practice Limited to Periodontics and Dental Implants in Dedham, MA.

Utilizing pig jaws, this course will review incisions utilized for surgical access around the natural dentition. Attendees will learn techniques for flap elevation, flap positioning, and suturing for closure. Anatomical considerations associated with flap elevation, periosteal fenestration, and incision closure will be discussed. Attendees will learn how to coronally advance a flap, reposition a flap, and apically position a flap will be explained, . The principles of osseous resection for pocket reduction as well as periodontal regeneration will be reviewed. Surgical instrumentation and various suture materials will also be discussed.

In this course attendees will:
  • Practice surgical techniques on a pig jaw
  • Discuss the rationale for surgical access
  • Identify how to make incisions for surgical access and how to elevate a flap
  • Examine the technique for periosteal fenestration for flap advancement
  • Review suturing techniques for flap closure
