Aidee Herman, DMD is an assistant clinical professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and founder and coordinator of the mentoring program, Promoting Dentistry as a Career for Minorities.

In this course we will examine the impact that stress in women has on periodontal disease during periods of hormonal changes. We will examine different periods of hormonal changes that occur throughout a women’s life and how the periodontium is affected, both at the histological and clinical level. We also analyze stress and its connection to chronic inflammation, which can be linked to numerous systematic conditions. The term Periodontal Medicine is increasingly becoming more widely used as a way for describing how periodontal disease impacts systemic health. Lastly, we will see how both stress and female sex hormones are risk factors in developing periodontal disease and how to minimize these risk factors.
