Medical emergencies occurring in the dental office are stressful and frightening not only for the patient, but also the dentist and dental team. This course is developed for dentists and staff to develop strategies to prevent, identify and respond to the major medical events dental teams are likely to encounter during dental treatment. Emphasis will be placed on preparing the office in advance of the crisis and optimizing the role of the entire staff during the event. After this course, the lecture notes can later be condensed into a “Quick Reference Manual” which can be kept in the clinic area of the practice to assist with appropriate response protocols.
Speakers
After this course attendees will be able to:
- List the six areas in which all dental offices need to prepare for an emergency
- Understand how to optimize staff during a medical event to provide optimum care
- Appreciate how to develop a simple drug kit
- Discuss the importance of having various oxygen techniques available to assist both breathing and non-breathing patients
- Learn how to have a economical, yet highly effective "crash cart" in your office
- Identify the signs and symptoms of the 11 medical emergencies likely to occur during dental treatment as recognized by the ADA and have a response protocol for each
