In this course attendees will review the more commonly employed management techniques for dental fear and anxiety, including the oral route of drug administration (e.g. triazolam [Halcion]); inhalation (N20-02); intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM) and intranasal (IN). Techniques will be compared as to efficacy and safety, as well as their utility in the typical dental practice for both the adult and pediatric dental patient.

After this course attendees will be able to:
- Understand the use of benzodiazepines in adult and pediatric oral sedation
- Compare inhalation sedation (N2O-O2) to oral sedation
- Identify the advantages of intravenous sedation when compared with oral sedation
- Name the indications for intranasal (IN) and intramuscular (IM) sedation
- Explain the most common problems (adverse events) associated with enteral sedation
- Define minimal, moderate, and deep sedation
- Discuss monitoring of patients during minimal, moderate, and deep sedation
