This course introduces dental assistants to the essential skills and responsibilities of an oral and maxillofacial dental assistant. Attendees will learn how to prepare a sterile field, simulate a surgical scrub, and practice sterile gloving techniques. The course covers performing simulated suture removal. Additionally, attendees will define biopsy procedures, understand different types of biopsies, and practice completing a brush biopsy requisition form. Emphasis is placed on identifying surgical instruments used in basic oral surgical procedures as well as passing instruments to prepare for real-world surgical settings. Through hands-on practice and
simulations, dental assistants will develop the necessary competencies for assisting in oral surgery.
Speakers
In this course attendees will:
- Summarize the qualities of an oral and maxillofacial dental assistant
- Prepare a sterile field for instruments and supplies with simulating a surgical scrub and performing sterile gloving
- Discuss assisting with suture placement, identify types of techniques, and perform simulated suture removal
- Define biopsy, describe the different biopsy procedures, and practice completing a brush biopsy requisition form
- Identify surgical instruments for basic surgical procedures
