AUTOTRANSPLANTATION: A CHANGING PERSPECTIVE ON REPLACING MISSING AND TRAUMATIZED TEETH

Autotransplantation is the movement of one tooth in the mouth to another area to replace a missing or damaged tooth. Dental implants have been a popular option but are not viable in growing patients. The late Prof. Dr. Jens Andreasen from Copenhagen Denmark demonstrated the benefits of dental autotransplantation with continued tooth eruption and osteogenic and soft tissue forming capabilities in the late 1980s. For the last 19 years in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and more recently at UNC School of Dentistry at Chapel Hill, teams representing different dental specialties have worked together to provide patients with different options to achieve optimal aesthetics and function in complex cases. In this session, examples of dental autotransplantation will be presented with long term successful results.
