This course will highlight the current concepts and techniques for providing effective non-surgical management of periodontal diseases in both a lecture and hands-on format. The etiology of periodontal diseases along with skills to help motivate patients to control dental plaque will be briefly reviewed with an understanding that periodontal-peri-implant diseases are systemic. Diagnostic techniques for accurate probing measurements and calculus detection will be discussed coupled with the hands-on use of a novel dental model with a stimulated attachment apparatus. The rationale of periodontal hand instrumentation will be presented with hands-on experience using a universal curette and Gracey curettes. Hands-on experience in instrument sharpening using diamond sharpening cards will be provided. The theory and use of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric ultrasonics will be presented with hands-on exercises using a variety of tips. The emerging role and use of air polishing with the latest agents and supragingival and subgingival tips will also be presented. The effective sequencing of appointments for initial periodontal therapy and the development of an effective maintenance program will be discussed.
