According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) National Drug Intelligence Center, the estimated cost of diversion to public/private medical insurers is $72 billion per year. Failures in your recordkeeping and security (contributing factors to drug diversion) could have significant personal costs, such as:

  • Patient harm (e.g., watered down or substituted meds affecting pain control)
  • Physical harm (e.g., needle sticks and infections spread from impaired coworkers)
  • Regulatory and civil liability (e.g., large fines)
  • Negative publicity (e.g., news media, social media, online ratings/reviews)
  • State license and DEA registration impacts (e.g., suspensions, surrenders)
  • Costs of remediation (e.g., new security equipment, new policies/procedures, lawyers/consultants/other expert assistance)

In this course we will discuss your BASIC responsibilities in an effort to prevent diversion of controlled substances.
