Stanley Malamed, DDS is emeritus professor of anesthesia and medicine at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California.
Life-threatening emergencies can occur anytime, and anywhere, to anyone. Such events are more likely to occur within the confines of the dental office due to the increased level of stress which is so often present. In this course, attendees will explore areas that are considered vital to a proper understanding of emergency medicine: prevention, preparation, recognition, and management. The instructor will discuss preparation of the office and staff, including a review of the office emergency kit. The specific emergencies that will be reviewed include: altered consciousness, respiratory distress, and asthma. 

Learning Objectives:

  • List the four steps in office preparation for medical emergencies
  • Describe the indications for the two injectable emergency drugs
  • Understand the indications for the five non-injectable emergency drugs
  • Identify the algorithm for basic management of all medical emergencies
  • Discuss the management of seizures and the management of bronchospasm
  • Explain the management of anaphylaxis
